Is Physiotherapy for you?

Physiotherapy is a science-based treatment that uses a range of techniques to help restore movement and function. Physiotherapists undertake a degree at University and are bound by the rules of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.

In a private practice most physiotherapists treat orthopaedic conditions. This includes spinal problems like cervical or lumbar herniated discs, sciatica, degenerated discs and osteoarthritis.

There are protocols for sports injuries, tendonitis, fractures, ligament and meniscus injuries, nerve root impingements, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel, postural dysfunctions, repetitive motion strains, fibromyalgia, temporomandibular joints, cervical headaches, etc.

The physiotherapist does an initial assessment to determine what form of treatment may be required. You may need specific exercises, stretching/strengthening, posture education, electrical modalities like ultrasound to help repair torn /strained ligaments or tendons, or be given manual techniques to correct dysfunctional joints. Education on self care for the condition is very important to progress and maintain improvement. Taking care of our posture is now more important than ever as we become more and more sedentary.

Early and consistent access to physiotherapy has proven to result in reduced health care costs, a quicker return to work and most importantly, better health.
